Yes. As of September 2026, Studio Gravida is the first atelier we are aware of to offer a pregnancy scanning app that runs on any modern smartphone, iPhone or Android, without extra hardware. No LiDAR, no TrueDepth camera, no dedicated depth sensor. Just the phone you already own. This article answers the questions the first mothers using it have asked, from what your phone actually does to what shows up in the app forty-five minutes later.
Why we built a scanning app
We spent years shipping a medical-grade scanner in a box. It works beautifully, but it asks a lot: a booking, a deposit, a courier on Wednesday, another one on Monday. Phone cameras have been getting quietly better for years, and photogrammetry, the way we already turn images into 3D models in our atelier, has been getting quietly better with them. Late last year we crossed the point where a careful set of phone photos, refined by hand at our workbench, produced a model good enough to shape a sculpture from. The app is what came next.
Which phones does the Scan App work on?
Any modern smartphone, iPhone or Android. There is no LiDAR requirement, no TrueDepth camera requirement, no dedicated depth sensor of any kind. The app uses your ordinary rear camera and your ordinary front camera, and asks you to take a series of photos in the light you already have. As long as your phone is running iOS 15 or Android 10 or newer (roughly a 2020-or-later device), it will work.

Every other at-home pregnancy scanning option we know of either ships a dedicated hardware scanner (the kit we still make), or requires a specific phone model with depth-camera hardware. Ours does not. If someone points us at another approach with the same reach, we will happily update this page.
What does the app actually do?
You open the app, follow a guided sequence, and take a set of photos of yourself standing in soft daylight. The app checks each frame in real time and asks for another if something is off. When you are done, the images travel to our atelier automatically. About forty-five minutes later, a first 3D model of your form appears on your private page inside the app.
How long does the whole thing take?
- About fifteen minutes of scanning on your side, most mothers finish in one attempt, some ask for a re-scan once they have learned what a good scan looks like.
- About forty-five minutes before the raw scan reaches our atelier team.
- Up to seventy-two hours for our refined proposal to come back to your inbox, we prefer to take our time here rather than rush the hand-work.
- Two to eight weeks to shape the sculpture, once you approve, depending on the material you choose.
Is the first 3D preview the final result?
No, and this matters. The raw scan does not reach our atelier until about forty-five minutes after you finish scanning. Only then can we start shaping a first digital model. A clean preview from a phone-based scan is simply not possible in a few minutes, sometimes what comes back has five arms, or a shoulder where a leg should be. Treat it as a rough impression, meant to show you the idea, not the finished piece.
The next step is a written review, not a rebuilt model yet. Within seventy-two hours our atelier team sends back a proposal: we mark what does not yet read on the automatic preview, describe how we would refine each piece, and leave room for you to add your own wishes or correct us where we misread you. Only once you approve this proposal do we spend the real hand-modelling hours that produce the finished digital model, and it is that finished model your sculpture is shaped from.
What does it cost, all in?
First 3D preview
Free. Every mother who scans with the app gets a free 3D look at her form. No card required to try it.
The atelier's proposal
€10. What you get at this step is not yet a finished model, it is our written plan for the finished one. Someone at our workbench in Haarlem looks at the automatically generated preview, marks what does not yet read, and describes how we would refine each piece. You reply, agree or disagree with our reading, and add your own wishes. Only once you approve this proposal do we sit down for the real hand-modelling work. The seventy-two hours is the atelier time this careful review takes, and the €10 covers those processing costs, coming back to you as a €10 discount code on the next step, so if you keep going, you effectively paid nothing extra for it.
Your finished digital model
€39. Once you approve the proposal, we spend the real hand-modelling hours rebuilding the file itself, cleaning up every artefact and shaping the silhouette by hand. When it is ready, we open a private page for you where the finished model lives. You can turn it in three-sixty, come back to it, share the link with whoever you choose.
A hand-finished sculpture
From €309. Shaped by hand in our Haarlem atelier, in resin, metalized bronze, cast bronze, silver, or 14K gold, from the same digital model.
The printable file (optional)
€30. Your refined model as a downloadable .stl or .obj file, yours to print, cast, or archive. Not included by default, we prefer the model to live on your private page.
What happens to my photos?
The photos you take during scanning are private and are deleted twenty-four hours after the atelier preview is delivered. They live on our servers only for that short window, only for the atelier's use. We do not archive them, we do not use them to train models, and we do not share them with anyone.
The refined digital model lives only on your own private page, reached through a unique code we email to you. It is not indexed by search engines, not searchable, not shared. You choose who else sees it.
When should I scan?
We recommend scanning after week thirty of pregnancy. For most mothers, weeks thirty-four to thirty-six are the most expressive moment. That said, if your body feels most yours a little earlier or later, trust that, and use the app when it feels right. Nothing prevents you from scanning again in a different week, each attempt is a separate free preview.
Do I still need the DIY scanner kit?
No, if you are happy scanning with your phone. The kit is still available for mothers who prefer a professional hardware scanner delivered by post, or who want the guided experience with a dedicated device. Both routes end in the same place, a digital model refined at our atelier and a sculpture in whichever material you choose. The app is faster, simpler, and lighter on your calendar; the kit is more thorough and does not depend on your phone's camera quality.
What if my first preview looks strange?
Expected. The automated first pass from phone photos is a rough sketch, not the final model. If it comes back with five arms or an odd shoulder, that is the algorithm's guess before we have touched it. Wait for the atelier proposal, seventy-two hours or so, before deciding what you think.
If after our refined proposal you still do not recognise yourself, write back and we will refine further, or ask you to send a second scan. The sculpture only goes into production when you approve.
Is this really the first pregnancy scan app for any phone?
To our knowledge, yes. There are pregnancy photography apps, and there are 3D scanning apps that require depth-camera hardware. As of the launch of this app in September 2026, we are not aware of another company offering a pregnancy scanning app that works on any modern smartphone, iPhone or Android, and turns the scan into a hand-finished sculpture.
